HDFC Bank is actively exploring various applications for the digital rupee (e-rupee) as India's central bank digital currency gains traction in the financial ecosystem. The bank is developing digital rupee-based gift vouchers and corporate payout mechanisms, alongside enabling offline payment functionality for airline transactions, according to officials familiar with the initiative.
The lender is working to integrate its CBDC wallet infrastructure with the BHIM platform, a government-backed unified payments interface, to facilitate merchant payments across a broader range of transaction scenarios. This integration aims to make digital rupee transactions more accessible to retail consumers and businesses.
The move reflects HDFC Bank's strategy to position itself at the forefront of digital currency adoption in India. The Reserve Bank of India has been gradually expanding the digital rupee pilot programme across select use cases and user segments since its introduction in late 2022.
These initiatives align with the central bank's broader objectives to digitalize the payments ecosystem while maintaining financial stability. HDFC Bank's exploration of rewards, corporate allowances, and travel-related payments demonstrates how banks are experimenting with practical applications beyond traditional peer-to-peer transactions.
The bank's efforts to enable offline digital rupee payments on flights address a key technical challenge in CBDC adoption, as airline transactions often occur in connectivity-limited environments. Such innovations could accelerate mainstream acceptance of the digital rupee among both consumers and merchants.
