HDFC Bank Eyes Net Interest Margin Recovery From Q3 Onwards

HDFC Bank, India's largest private sector lender by assets, has signalled expectations of margin expansion from the third quarter of the financial year as it implements repricing mechanisms on floating-rate loan portfolios. The bank's management indicated that sequential margin pressure experienced in earlier quarters should begin to ease as loan repricing cycles kick in across its retail and corporate segments. The repricing of floating-rate advances is expected to help offset the full-quarter impact of Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits, which have elevated funding costs for Indian banks in recent periods. The lender has been grappling with compressed net interest margins—the difference between lending and deposit rates—as monetary authorities maintained higher interest rate regimes to combat inflation. Analysts tracking the banking sector noted that most domestic lenders have faced margin headwinds from elevated overnight funding costs and rising deposit rates needed to maintain deposit growth. HDFC Bank's outlook suggests that as interest rate cycles stabilize and asset-liability management strategies normalize, the bank expects to restore healthier margin profiles in coming quarters, supporting earnings growth.
