HDFC Bank Q2 earnings likely to face margin pressure despite deposit growth

HDFC Bank is poised to report modest profit growth in the second quarter, with earnings expansion likely to remain constrained in the low single-digit range, according to market expectations ahead of the results announcement. The country's largest private sector lender is expected to benefit from robust deposit inflows, particularly from foreign currency non-resident (FCNR(B)) deposits, which have provided a steady source of funding in recent quarters.

However, this deposit strength may not fully translate into profitability gains due to prevailing headwinds on net interest margins (NIM). The banking sector continues to grapple with compression in lending spreads as competition intensifies and deposit costs rise, pressuring the difference between lending and borrowing rates.

The deposit growth trajectory has been a bright spot for HDFC Bank, with the lender benefiting from stable inflows and customer preference for higher-yielding deposits. The FCNR(B) segment has particularly supported overall deposit growth, providing the bank with foreign exchange liquidity and diversified funding sources.

Margin pressure remains a key concern for investors monitoring the lender's performance. As deposit rates have climbed to remain competitive, and lending rates face competitive pressure, net interest margins are expected to face headwinds that could limit bottom-line expansion even as the bank's balance sheet grows.
