HDFC Bank has announced a compensation structure for Anup Bagchi that is set to make him the nation's most highly-remunerated banking sector executive. The lender's board has approved an annual package worth ₹35.9 crore for Bagchi in his role as MD and CEO, according to regulatory filings.
The compensation structure comprises multiple components designed to align executive performance with shareholder returns. Variable pay accounts for ₹26.92 crore of the total annual package, reflecting performance-linked incentives. Additionally, Bagchi will receive a ₹7.35 crore joining bonus upon assuming office, recognizing the transition costs associated with his appointment to one of India's largest private sector banks.
The package underscores HDFC Bank's commitment to attracting and retaining top-tier leadership at a time of significant expansion and digital transformation across the Indian banking sector. The compensation levels require approval from the bank's shareholders and regulatory authorities, including the Reserve Bank of India, which maintains oversight of remuneration practices in the banking industry.
