Health Ministry bolsters respiratory equipment as haze triggers surge in cases
Malaysia's Health Ministry is ramping up supplies of aerochambers and nebulisers across healthcare facilities as transboundary haze drives a spike in respiratory complaints nationwide.

KUALA LUMPUR — The Ministry of Health has accelerated procurement and distribution of critical respiratory medical equipment to health clinics and hospitals in response to escalating air quality concerns linked to regional haze. The move follows a marked increase in patients presenting with respiratory ailments at healthcare facilities, attributed to prolonged exposure to elevated particulate matter in the air.
Aerochambers and nebulisers—devices that enable effective delivery of inhaled medications—have been identified as priority equipment required to manage the rising caseload. The Ministry is coordinating with suppliers and logistics partners to ensure adequate stock levels across its healthcare network, from primary care clinics to tertiary hospitals, to prevent shortages during the peak season.
The respiratory strain comes amid recurring transboundary haze that affects air quality across Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asian region. Vulnerable populations including children, elderly persons, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions face heightened health risks during periods of poor air quality.
Healthcare providers have been advised to intensify monitoring and preparedness protocols. The Health Ministry continues to coordinate with relevant agencies to address the underlying environmental factors contributing to the haze while ensuring adequate medical resources remain available to treat affected patients.
