Health Ministry to introduce cottage hospital concept in rural areas
Malaysia's Health Ministry is planning to roll out a 'cottage hospital' initiative to improve healthcare access in remote regions with limited hospital facilities. The scheme aims to upgrade existing health clinics to provide enhanced medical services.

The Ministry of Health (KKM) is designing a new healthcare delivery model centred on establishing cottage hospitals in underserved rural communities across the country. The initiative seeks to bridge gaps in medical access for populations living far from conventional hospital infrastructure. Under the proposal, selected health clinics in remote areas would undergo facility improvements to offer expanded services beyond primary care. The cottage hospital concept envisions these upgraded facilities functioning as intermediate healthcare centres, capable of handling a broader range of patient cases while maintaining accessibility for rural communities. By enhancing existing clinic infrastructure rather than constructing new facilities from scratch, the ministry aims to optimise resource allocation and reduce implementation timelines. Officials indicated that the scheme would focus on areas currently experiencing significant barriers to hospital access, ensuring residents receive timely medical intervention without travelling long distances. The initiative forms part of the government's broader healthcare equity agenda to narrow disparities in service provision between urban and rural regions.
