A 35-year-old nurse employed by the Department of Health died Thursday after being struck by a collapsing concrete waiting shed in Catbalogan City, Samar. The victim, identified as Kelvin Castro, was at a passenger waiting area on Sierra Island in Barangay Canhawan Gote when the concrete slab gave way in the afternoon.

Castro was awaiting a boat to transport him home when the structure failed. Authorities in the Eastern Visayas city have not yet disclosed the cause of the collapse or details of any investigation into the incident.

The death adds to concerns about infrastructure safety in remote and island communities across the Philippines, where many public facilities operate with limited maintenance resources. Officials have not announced plans for inspections of similar structures in the area.

The Department of Health has not issued a statement regarding the loss of one of its personnel. Local authorities in Catbalogan are expected to conduct an investigation into the structural failure.
