A group of eight hearing-impaired women in Malappuram district have launched a new clothing business following completion of vocational training in assistant dress-making. The venture, named 'Colours', was established by Sabna V.K., Ramya A., Afeefa K., Sameena M.K., Nimmy N., Rajeena P., Salma V.P., and Sajeena C. after they finished their training programme.
The women completed their professional qualification through Jan Shikshan Sansthan, an autonomous organization under India's Ministry of Education that offers skill development and vocational training to marginalized communities. The structured programme equipped them with technical expertise in garment construction and design.
The establishment of 'Colours' addresses both employment challenges and social inclusion for persons with hearing impairments in Kerala. Entrepreneurship through skill development has emerged as an effective pathway for enabling economic independence among individuals facing employment barriers due to disabilities.
The initiative demonstrates the potential of vocational training to create sustainable livelihoods while fostering entrepreneurial confidence among underrepresented groups. Similar skill-based programmes continue to expand across South India, offering practical pathways toward self-employment and business ownership.
