BACOLOD CITY — School officials in Negros Occidental province suspended in-person classes Tuesday, Nov. 3, citing extreme weather conditions expected to pose health risks to students and staff. The decision kept thousands of learners out of classrooms across the province.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration predicted heat index readings would climb to 41 degrees Celsius throughout the province on Tuesday morning. Such elevated temperatures can trigger heat-related illnesses, prompting concern among education and public health officials.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office coordinated the class suspension with schools to protect students from heat exposure during commutes and classroom hours. The agency cited the extreme heat as a significant occupational and health threat to the school population.
No immediate announcement was made regarding classes for the following days, though officials indicated continued monitoring of weather conditions to determine when normal school operations could resume safely.
