Educational institutions across five districts in Tamil Nadu remained closed on Wednesday following heavy overnight rainfall that inundated several towns across the state's southern regions. The downpour, which persisted through the night, prompted district administrations to order the closure of schools as a precautionary measure.
Mamallapuram in Chengalpattu district recorded the highest rainfall, measuring 9 centimetres, according to meteorological data. Tenkasi and Sattankulam in Thoothukudi district each received 6 centimetres of precipitation, while Tirunelveli, Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur recorded 5 centimetres each.
The widespread rainfall, part of the northeast monsoon pattern affecting the region, has raised concerns about waterlogging and potential disruptions to daily life. Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to remain cautious during commutes and maintain vigilance for any weather-related hazards.
Educational authorities did not announce a timeline for reopening schools, indicating that further assessment of weather conditions and ground situations would guide their decision. Parents and students have been directed to await further official notifications from their respective district administrations regarding the resumption of regular classes.
