The India Meteorological Department placed a red alert across four districts of Delhi on Wednesday as intense rainfall swept through the national capital. North Delhi, North West Delhi, West Delhi and South West Delhi were under the highest weather alert as of mid-afternoon, according to the IMD's nowcast system.
The downpour comes on the eve of Karwa Chauth, the festival observed by married Hindu women who traditionally fast from sunrise to moonrise. The sighting of the moon marks the conclusion of the day-long fast, making clear skies essential for the observance.
Meteorological forecasts indicate persistent cloud cover across Delhi throughout Wednesday evening, potentially hampering moon visibility during the festival's critical hours. The IMD's red alert, typically issued for exceptionally severe weather conditions, underscores the intensity of the rainfall affecting the capital.
Religious authorities and community leaders were monitoring weather developments closely, with some preparations being made for alternate arrangements should cloud cover prevent direct moon sighting. The meteorological department advised residents to stay updated on official weather bulletins for the latest conditions.
