A depression that formed over the East-central and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, according to forecasts issued by Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology on Sunday morning. The system, positioned near latitude 15.3°N and longitude 89.7°E, has been tracking westward with significant implications for weather patterns across the island.
The Department of Meteorology expects showers exceeding 100 millimetres at isolated locations throughout several provinces. Residents in the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western, and Central provinces should prepare for substantial rainfall, with similar conditions forecast for the North-central region and Trincomalee district in the Eastern Province.
The meteorological alert, issued at 5:30 a.m. on October 26, indicates that the deep depression's westward movement will bring moisture-laden winds that could trigger significant precipitation across affected areas. The public is advised to remain alert for potential flooding and landslide risks, particularly in vulnerable regions experiencing heavy downpours. Weather updates are expected as the system continues its trajectory toward the subcontinent.
