Heavy rainfall expected across multiple provinces as low-pressure system develops

A low-level atmospheric disturbance positioned near Sri Lanka is expected to develop into a fully-formed low-pressure system within the coming day, according to forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology on Tuesday morning. The developing weather system is likely to trigger widespread precipitation across multiple regions of the island.

The meteorological department has identified six provinces at particular risk of heavy rainfall, with showers exceeding 100 millimetres forecast for some localities. The Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, Northern and Southern provinces, along with Anuradhapura district, are expected to experience the most significant rainfall activity as the low-pressure area strengthens.

Residents and authorities in affected areas are advised to monitor weather updates closely and take necessary precautions against potential flooding and related hazards. The forecast was issued at 5.30 a.m. on 21 October and remains subject to updates as the atmospheric system evolves.
