Heavy rainfall expected across western and central Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has forecasted heavy showers for Saturday, 25 October, with rainfall expected to exceed 100 millimetres in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North-western provinces, as well as in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, and Anuradhapura districts.

The alert follows the intensification of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal near the North Andaman Islands into a depression as of late on 24 October. The system's movement is expected to significantly impact weather conditions across the island.

Residents in the affected regions are advised to take precautions against flooding and water-related hazards. The northern province has also been included in the warning zone, indicating the broad geographical extent of the expected weather impact.

The Department of Meteorology issued the forecast at 5.30 a.m. on 25 October, providing advance notice to allow communities and authorities time to prepare for the anticipated heavy rainfall.
