Heavy rainfall forces schools across Tamil Nadu to suspend classes

Schools across Chennai and four adjoining districts in Tamil Nadu have announced suspension of classes following persistent rainfall that swept the region over the past 24 hours. The decision was taken to ensure student safety and facilitate smooth commute to and from educational institutions amid waterlogged streets and slippery roads.

The India Meteorological Department's weather stations recorded substantial precipitation across the city and surrounding areas. Meenambakkam station registered the highest rainfall at 12 centimetres, followed closely by Nungambakkam with 11 centimetres. Taramani recorded 10 centimetres, while Madhavaram received 9 centimetres of rainfall. Villivakkam and Nandanam each reported 8 centimetres.

The meteorological data indicated a well-distributed rainfall pattern across the urban agglomeration and peripheral districts, suggesting widespread weather impact. Civic authorities advised residents to exercise caution while commuting and remain alert to weather updates. The holiday declaration applied to schools across multiple educational boards operating in the affected districts.

Weather forecasters indicated continued monitoring of atmospheric conditions to determine if further weather-related disruptions were anticipated in the coming days.
