Heliports, helipads exempt from environmental clearance requirement
The Union environment ministry has clarified that heliport and helipad projects do not require prior environmental clearance under existing regulations. The exemption applies because these facilities are not listed in the EIA Notification's scheduled activities.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has issued a clarification stating that heliports and helipads are not subject to mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) clearance requirements. According to the ministry, these aviation facilities fall outside the scope of activities listed in the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, which mandates prior environmental approval for specified projects.
The exemption applies to both new heliport and helipad construction projects across India. Since helicopter landing facilities are not enumerated in the EIA Notification's Schedule, project developers are not obligated to obtain environmental clearance from the ministry before proceeding with their establishment.
This clarification streamlines the regulatory pathway for heliport and helipad development, potentially expediting projects that rely on helicopter operations. The decision aligns with the ministry's approach of applying environmental assessment requirements only to those activities explicitly listed in the notification framework.
The clarification is expected to facilitate faster implementation of helicopter infrastructure projects, including those for emergency services, corporate operations, and tourism activities. However, such projects may still be subject to other relevant regulations and approvals from aviation authorities and local governing bodies.
