HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) has publicly recognized the role of its donors in sustaining a free cataract surgery program targeting underprivileged senior citizens aged 55 and above. The acknowledgment came during a recent seminar where the organization highlighted the ongoing impact of the initiative.
The free cataract surgery programme, operated through HelpAge Eye Hospital in Wellawatta, was established in 2002. Hospital records indicate the program has successfully completed more than 55,000 surgical procedures over the past two decades, providing vision restoration services to vulnerable elderly populations who would otherwise lack access to treatment.
The program represents a significant public health intervention in Sri Lanka, addressing cataracts—a leading cause of preventable blindness among older adults. By offering free surgical services, HelpAge Sri Lanka has extended healthcare access to economically disadvantaged seniors across the country.
The organization's continued reliance on donor support underscores the funding challenges faced by non-profit healthcare providers in expanding services to marginalized communities. HelpAge Sri Lanka's recognition of its partners reflects the collaborative approach required to sustain long-term health initiatives serving vulnerable populations.
