HerCourt initiative introduces tennis to domestic workers in Singapore

HerCourt, a tennis outreach programme, organised an introductory session for two dozen domestic helpers in Singapore, marking an effort to expand participation in the sport beyond traditional demographics. The coaching session drew on expertise from three players with competitive pedigree: Taiwanese Latisha Chan, a former world No. 1 in women's doubles; Singapore's Sarah Pang; and fellow local player Lela Zainal.

The programme reflects a broader push to make tennis more inclusive and accessible across different communities in Singapore. Domestic helpers, who constitute a significant proportion of the city's workforce, have historically had limited access to recreational sports programmes and facilities.

Participants received hands-on instruction in basic tennis techniques and were introduced to the fundamentals of the game. The session was designed to be welcoming and informal, with an emphasis on enjoyment and skill-building rather than competitive performance.

HerCourt's initiative aligns with growing recognition among sports organisations in Singapore of the importance of reaching underrepresented groups. The programme hopes to inspire continued participation and foster a more diverse tennis community across the island.
