A team of art conservators working at a Scottish museum made an extraordinary find in 2022 when X-ray examination of a Van Gogh canvas revealed a hidden self-portrait underneath layers of glue and cardboard backing. The portrait had remained concealed for more than a century, preserved in obscurity on the verso of the work.
The discovery emerged during routine preparation for a planned exhibition. Rather than discard or paint over used canvases, Van Gogh frequently reused materials throughout his career due to persistent financial constraints. This economical practice, while born of necessity, has inadvertently created layers of artistic and historical significance within individual works.
Conservators have undertaken careful efforts to reveal the hidden portrait without causing damage to either the concealed artwork or the painting on the front of the canvas. The technical challenges involved in separating the adhesive materials and cardboard backing required specialized expertise to preserve both compositions.
Exhibition visitors were able to view X-ray imaging of the concealed self-portrait, allowing the public to witness this artistic rediscovery. The find adds another chapter to the growing body of knowledge about Van Gogh's working methods and resourcefulness during his creative years.
