A High Court judge has rejected former Prime Minister Najib Razak's application to stay his prison sentence, ruling that his medical conditions do not constitute special circumstances warranting delay of his incarceration.

KUALA LUMPUR — The High Court has dismissed Najib Razak's latest attempt to postpone serving his prison sentence in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal, with the presiding judge determining that the former prime minister's health issues did not meet the threshold for exceptional circumstances.
The court's decision marks another setback for Najib's legal team, which has pursued multiple avenues to challenge or delay the implementation of his conviction and custodial sentence. The judge's ruling specifically addressed arguments centred on Najib's medical condition, finding insufficient grounds to warrant a suspension of the sentence pending further appeals.
Najib has faced intense legal scrutiny related to the massive financial scandal at 1MDB, a state investment fund, which resulted in significant losses to Malaysia's public coffers. His case has drawn considerable attention both domestically and internationally as one of the highest-profile corruption prosecutions in the country.
The rejection of the stay application suggests that legal proceedings in the case are progressing toward finality, though Najib's defence team may pursue additional remedies through higher courts. The decision underscores the judiciary's position that standard medical circumstances, absent extraordinary factors, do not typically justify delays in executing sentences handed down by courts.
