The High Court has set aside a RM1.55 million legal fee agreement involving 203 wards, finding that the arrangement between lawyers and their charges was not concluded on equitable terms. Justice Datuk Seri Dr Zaharah Ibrahim delivered the ruling after examining the circumstances surrounding the agreement in the investment dispute case. The court determined that the procedural fairness required in such matters had not been adequately observed when the original terms were negotiated and finalised. Following the decision, the judge has ordered 18 law firms engaged in the matter to undergo a comprehensive reassessment of their fees. The reassessment is expected to ensure that charges levied against the 203 wards are proportionate and justified based on work actually performed. Legal experts said the judgment underscores the court's commitment to protecting vulnerable parties, particularly minors whose interests are represented through guardianship arrangements, from potentially excessive or unfairly-negotiated professional fees.
