High levels of microplastics found in soil near Kerala's Periyar riverbank

Researchers at the School of Environmental Studies at Mahatma Gandhi University conducted tests on soil samples collected near the Periyar riverbank in the Edayar industrial zone, documenting the presence of microplastic particles at concerning levels. The findings underscore growing environmental challenges in industrial areas where plastic waste management remains inadequate.

Microplastics are tiny plastic fragments smaller than five millimetres that enter soil and water systems through the breakdown of larger plastic waste and direct discharge from industrial and consumer sources. The detection of such high concentrations near a major river raises questions about potential contamination of water resources and the broader ecosystem.

The Periyar river, one of Kerala's most significant waterways, flows through several industrial and urban zones before reaching the Arabian Sea. Soil contamination near its banks suggests that microplastics may be entering the river system, with potential implications for aquatic life and water quality.

The study adds to growing evidence of microplastic pollution across South Asia, where rapid industrialisation and inadequate waste management infrastructure have created favourable conditions for plastic accumulation in sensitive environments. Environmental authorities may need to intensify efforts to regulate industrial discharge and improve plastic waste collection systems in industrial clusters.
