High-speed rail to slash Varanasi-Delhi travel time to 3.5 hours

The proposed high-speed rail corridor will establish direct connectivity between Delhi and Varanasi, cutting current journey times from over 12 hours to approximately 3.5 hours, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The ambitious infrastructure project has received approval from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant milestone in India's push toward modern rail transport.

The corridor will create a strategic network linking several major cities along the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Beyond the Delhi-Varanasi main route, the line will serve intermediate destinations including Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Ayodhya, connecting key religious, cultural, and commercial hubs across North India.

The railway network's planned extension will push further eastward toward Guwahati in Assam, facilitating connectivity to the Northeast region. This alignment suggests the project aims to integrate major population centers and improve economic linkages across multiple states.

The development forms part of India's broader modernization agenda for rail infrastructure. High-speed rail corridors are expected to reduce travel times, enhance connectivity between tier-one and tier-two cities, and support regional economic development. The project's implementation timeline and budgetary allocation have not yet been detailed by the railways ministry.
