The collision occurred when a high-speed train struck the rear of another train that had stopped on the tracks in central Spain. Emiliano García-Page, president of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, confirmed the death toll and said approximately 80 people had been injured in the incident.

Among the injured, about 50 were reported to be in serious condition, while 15 others sustained critical injuries requiring immediate medical attention. Emergency services mobilised rescue teams to the crash site to assist survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

The impact of the collision was severe enough to derail two carriages from one of the trains, hampering initial rescue efforts. Investigators began examining the circumstances that led to the stationary train remaining on the tracks at the time of the collision.

The incident represents one of Spain's deadliest railway accidents in recent years. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash, with preliminary focus on signalling systems and communication between train operators.
