The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has completed a significant recycling effort on the Bangerter Highway, where approximately 15,000 cubic yards of old concrete were processed directly at the construction site rather than transported to external facilities.
The recycled material was crushed and repurposed as structural foundation material for new highway interchanges, demonstrating a practical application of waste reduction in major infrastructure work. By processing the concrete in place, the project substantially decreased the number of truck journeys required, lowering both transportation costs and associated fuel consumption.
The initiative provided the three-decade-old highway with a substantial upgrade while minimising waste disposal needs.
