Himalayan glacial floods pose growing threat, UN warns

A senior United Nations official has cautioned that the Himalayan mountain range faces heightened danger from glacial outburst floods in the years ahead, signalling deepening concerns over climate-related water security across the region.

The warning highlights how warming temperatures are accelerating glacial melt across the world's highest mountain range, which spans multiple nations including Nepal, Bhutan, India, and Pakistan. Glacial lakes formed by this melting pose particular risks, as their sudden drainage can trigger destructive floods that threaten downstream communities and infrastructure.

The Himalayas are home to some of the world's largest concentrations of glaciers outside the polar regions. Millions of people across South Asia depend on rivers originating from these glaciers for drinking water, irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation.

Climate scientists have documented accelerating glacier retreat across the Himalayan region over recent decades. Experts emphasise that enhanced monitoring systems and early warning mechanisms are critical to mitigating potential disasters and protecting vulnerable populations living downstream of glacial zones.
