In an increasingly bilingual society, Indians often incorporate English words into their daily vocabulary without considering their Hindi counterparts. Common terms such as passport, ticket, platform, password, mobile, and interview are regularly used in conversation, yet their Hindi equivalents remain unfamiliar to many speakers.
The word 'passport,' essential for international travel, translates to '여행-पत्र' or 'पासपोर्ट-पत्र' in Hindi, literally meaning travel document. Similarly, 'ticket,' used for transportation and events, corresponds to 'टिकट' or more traditionally 'प्रवेश-पत्र,' which denotes an entry permit.
'Platform,' commonly referenced in contexts ranging from railways to digital spaces, is known as 'मंच' in Hindi, a term that conveys the sense of a stage or foundation. The word 'password,' crucial in the digital age, translates to 'गोपनीय-शब्द' or 'पहचान-कोड,' both emphasizing secrecy and identification.
The term 'mobile,' referring to mobile phones, is simply called 'मोबाइल' or 'दूरभाष' in Hindi, with the latter being a more traditional term for telephone. Finally, 'interview,' used in job recruitment and media contexts, translates to 'साक्षात्कार' in Hindi, meaning a face-to-face meeting or dialogue.
Language experts suggest that promoting awareness of Hindi equivalents for frequently used English terms can strengthen the language's presence in professional and casual settings while making communication more inclusive for Hindi-predominant speakers.
