Hindu purification ritual held at CEC's ancestral home in Agra

A ceremonial purification took place at the ancestral home of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Agra, with women conducting the ritual using Ganges water and reciting passages from the Sunderkand, a section of the Hindu epic Ramayana.

The purification ceremony was organised following an incident on September 28, when the residence was reportedly defaced during a Congress party demonstration. The protest left marks on the exterior of the building, prompting the family to arrange the religious cleansing.

Such purification rituals hold significant cultural and spiritual importance in Hindu tradition. The use of Ganges water in the ceremony reflects the reverence given to the river in Hindu practice, while the recitation of Sunderkand passages is believed to invoke divine blessings and cleanse spaces spiritually.

The incident underscores tensions that occasionally arise during political protests in India, particularly when demonstrations affect private residences of public figures. The family's decision to conduct the ritual publicly reflects the intersection of personal faith practices and public life in Indian society.
