Hindu Tradition Guides Funeral Rites for Young Children in India

Hindu funeral customs differentiate between various age groups when a child passes away, with specific rituals prescribed for each category according to the Garuda Purana, one of the principal Hindu texts on death and afterlife.

Under traditional Hindu practice, no formal funeral rites are performed for stillborn children or those who die within two years of birth. Similarly, children between two and six years of age do not receive the standard shraddha ceremony, which is typically reserved for adults and older children.

However, the Malinasodashi tradition provides an alternative ceremonial practice for children in the two-to-six age group. This specific ritual framework allows families to perform appropriate rites and honour the deceased child while adhering to scriptural guidelines that distinguish this age category from both infants and older children.

These age-based distinctions in Hindu funeral practices reflect long-standing interpretations of sacred texts and continue to guide families across India in determining the appropriate manner to conduct last rites and memorial ceremonies for children at different stages of life.
