Hirunika obstruction case adjourned as Attorney General delays instructions
The Colombo Magistrate's Court has postponed proceedings against former MP Hirunika Premachandra and others charged with obstructing public roads during an International Women's Day street drama. The adjournment was granted after the Attorney General's office failed to provide necessary legal directions.

The Colombo Magistrate's Court yesterday postponed the case against former parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra and several other women to January 25, citing the absence of required instructions from the Attorney General's office.
The case relates to a street performance staged during International Women's Day celebrations in the Cinnamon Gardens Police Division. The accused face charges of allegedly obstructing public roads during the event. The hearing was conducted before Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva.
The postponement underscores delays in the prosecution's preparation, with legal directions from the Attorney General's office remaining outstanding. Such instructions are typically necessary before magistrate courts can proceed with cases of this nature.
The case is expected to be called again on January 25, when prosecutors are anticipated to have received the necessary guidance to move proceedings forward. The delay adds to a series of adjournments the case has experienced since charges were filed against the accused women.
