Historic 1728 Albany building opens after 13-year restoration project

The Van Ostrande-Radliff House, constructed in 1728, has been restored to operational status after undergoing extensive rehabilitation work. The project, which required over 13 years of careful restoration work and a three-million-dollar investment, has transformed the historic structure into an active cultural and educational facility.

The building now functions as the headquarters of the Historic Albany Foundation, an organization dedicated to safeguarding the architectural legacy of Albany. The restoration has enabled the foundation to establish comprehensive facilities within the historic structure, including educational spaces and research resources.

Visitors to the renovated building can access classroom facilities designed for educational programming, a research library supporting historical scholarship, and archival storage for architectural documentation and historical materials. The facility represents a significant effort to preserve and interpret the colonial-era heritage that defines much of Albany's built environment.

The completion of the restoration project marks a turning point for the 295-year-old structure, which had fallen into obscurity before the foundation's intervention. The project demonstrates the feasibility of large-scale historic preservation within urban settings and provides a functional model for adaptive reuse of colonial-era architecture.
