Historic Building Safeguards Preserved After Community Opposition

Saratoga Springs Mayor John Safford has suspended planned amendments to the city's historic building demolition regulations after facing significant community resistance during public consultations. Residents and preservation advocates raised concerns during a municipal hearing, prompting the administration to reconsider its approach to the proposed changes.

The existing demolition safeguards that protect heritage buildings will continue to remain in effect during the review process. Safford's office confirmed that the current regulatory protections would not be weakened while the city undertakes a broader examination of its development rules and requirements.

Despite the pause on demolition rule modifications, the mayor has indicated his intention to proceed with revisions to other sections of the city's development regulations. The administration plans to conduct further consultations with residents and stakeholders as it refines its proposals.

A public hearing before the City Council has been scheduled to allow additional community input on the proposed regulatory amendments. The consultation process is expected to provide residents with further opportunities to voice their concerns and contribute to the decision-making process regarding the city's development framework.
