Historic Clearwater clock restored to glory after 100 years of exposure

A treasured landmark in Clearwater, Florida has been restored to its former glory following an extensive conservation effort. The iconic four-faced clock, which has long marked time on Cleveland Street, underwent a comprehensive restoration that combined historical preservation with modern engineering.

Clockmaker David H. Boyd took charge of the restoration project, dedicating 700 hours to the intricate work. The project presented significant challenges given the clock's prolonged exposure to the elements over nearly a century, which had taken its toll on both the structure and internal mechanisms.

Boyd's approach balanced preservation with functionality. He retained the original dial and hands—key elements that connect the clock to Clearwater's heritage—while carefully installing new clockworks to ensure reliable operation. This blend of old and new allows the timepiece to serve its practical purpose while maintaining its historical integrity.

The restored clock now stands once again on Cleveland Street, serving the dual purpose of marking the passage of time and serving as a physical link to the city's past.
