The Manhattan Casino, built in 1925 in Florida's historic Deuces neighbourhood, has resumed operations after completing a $4.8 million renovation project. The two-storey building stood dormant for over five decades before city authorities undertook the restoration effort to preserve the structure and its cultural significance.
During its heyday, the venue served as a premier destination for African American performers and audiences, hosting an impressive array of jazz and blues talent. Legendary musicians including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and B.B. King graced its stage, cementing the Manhattan Casino's place in American musical history.
The renovation has transformed the property into a municipally-owned event space, intended to serve the community and celebrate the neighbourhood's rich cultural heritage. The project reflects efforts to preserve historically significant African American cultural institutions while adapting them for contemporary use.
