Historic Frank Lloyd Wright planetarium reopens after two decades

The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel planetarium at Florida Southern College has reopened its doors to the public after more than 20 years of restricted use. The historic structure, originally designed by the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, underwent comprehensive restoration to bring its aging equipment into the modern era.

The facility's original projection system ceased functioning in 2004, rendering it largely unusable for public programming. The college undertook a complete technological overhaul, installing contemporary projection and sound systems that meet current educational and entertainment standards.

The revitalized planetarium will now operate as an active community resource, offering regular astronomy shows and educational programmes four days per week. The venue will accommodate school visits and public viewing sessions, making astronomical education more accessible to students and residents across the region.

The restoration represents a significant conservation effort for a structure bearing the architectural signature of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the 20th century's most influential design figures. The project preserves the facility's historical character while enabling it to serve contemporary audiences through updated technology.
