Historic Gangakatwa canal in Telangana to get ₹37-crore restoration

The Gangakatwa canal in Sangareddy district is poised for a major revival through a ₹37-crore restoration initiative, signalling renewed focus on preserving the region's historic irrigation infrastructure. The canal, a legacy project from the seventh Nizam's period, has long served as a critical water source for farming communities across the region.

Once operational at full capacity, the canal was designed to irrigate approximately 3,300 acres of cultivable land spanning 11 villages in the Sangareddy area. The restoration project aims to restore the canal's original functionality and bring dormant agricultural land back into productive use.

The planned intervention reflects ongoing efforts to rehabilitate aging irrigation systems across Telangana, many of which date back several centuries and continue to support rural livelihoods. Officials have indicated that the restoration work will focus on repairing damaged sections and ensuring efficient water distribution to command areas.

The revival of the Gangakatwa canal is expected to provide immediate relief to farming communities dependent on supplementary irrigation, particularly during seasons when monsoon rainfall proves inadequate. Completion of the restoration work could unlock significant agricultural potential in the district while preserving an important heritage structure.
