Historic Nevada divorce ranch transforms into state's newest public park

The Lower Carson Ranch, a landmark property in Nevada's history, is embarking on a new chapter as it transitions from private hands to public stewardship. The 1,627-acre expanse, situated alongside the Carson River, gained prominence during the 1940s when Nevada's lenient six-week divorce law transformed the region into a destination for women seeking swift legal separations from across the United States.

The property's conversion to a state park marks the conclusion of more than a century and a half of continuous private ownership. Nevada State Parks has assumed management of the ranch, recognizing both its historical significance and its ecological value as a habitat for native wildlife along the Carson River corridor.

Development of the site for public access is currently underway, though entry remains restricted during the planning phase. State officials have engaged the community in the process of selecting a new name for the park, signalling an intention to blend the site's historical identity with its emerging role as a recreational and conservation resource.

The transition reflects broader efforts across Nevada to preserve lands of historical and environmental importance while expanding public access to natural areas throughout the state.
