Historic Twin Chimneys motel demolished after nearly 90 years

The Twin Chimneys Motor Court, a distinctive roadside landmark in Cheyenne, has been demolished following its near-90-year tenure in the American West. The structure's signature twin stone chimneys, which defined the motor court's architectural identity and served as a recognizable waypoint along the historic Lincoln Highway, were brought down in approximately 30 seconds during the demolition process.

The motor court had operated as a popular lodging establishment for decades, reflecting mid-20th century American highway culture when such motor courts dotted major routes across the United States. The facility's distinctive chimneys made it a notable visual landmark for travellers journeying along the Lincoln Highway, one of the earliest major transcontinental automobile routes in North America.

The site's future has been determined by commercial interests, with plans to construct a 7 Brew Coffee drive-thru facility in place of the historic structure. The redevelopment represents a shift in the utilisation of commercial roadside real estate, prioritising quick-service beverage operations over the accommodation-based business model that defined the original establishment.

The demolition marks another chapter in the transformation of American highway landscapes, where historic mid-century establishments increasingly give way to contemporary commercial development.
