The Perry House, constructed in 1876 for businessman William Hayes Perry, has become a significant landmark of Los Angeles' architectural heritage. The grand Victorian mansion recently celebrated 150 years of existence by providing rare public access to its second floor, allowing visitors to view carefully preserved rooms from the 19th century in their original condition.
The residence faced an uncertain future until preservationists intervened in 1975 to prevent its demolition. The historic structure was subsequently relocated to Heritage Square Museum, where it continues to stand as a testament to the city's early architectural legacy. The building's relocation proved instrumental in ensuring its survival for future generations.
The anniversary celebration and limited access program serve a dual purpose for heritage conservators. Beyond allowing the public to experience the mansion's preserved interiors, the initiative generates revenue critical for the building's structural maintenance.
