Historical Marker Honors Marinduque's Revolutionary Legacy

A historical marker was installed in Torrijos, Marinduque this week, commemorating the formation and contributions of the Marinduque Revolutionary Force during a critical period in Philippine history.

The marker was unveiled by the National Historical Institute to recognize the organized resistance that emerged in Marinduque following the outbreak of hostilities between Filipino and American forces on February 4, 1899. The province became an active theater of resistance during the early phase of the Philippine-American War.

Then-Governor Martin Lardizabal established the Marinduque Revolutionary Force in response to orders from General Mariano Trias of the Southern forces. The formation of this local military unit reflected the broader national mobilization against American colonial forces during the war.

The installation of the historical marker underscores efforts to preserve and document the contributions of provincial forces during the struggle for Philippine independence. Such commemorations serve to educate current and future generations about the regional dimensions of the Philippine-American conflict and the civilian leadership that coordinated resistance efforts throughout the archipelago.
