Ho Chi Minh City launches $9.6bn metro expansion programme

Ho Chi Minh City authorities have initiated plans to significantly expand the municipal metro system through the development of three new rapid transit lines. The ambitious infrastructure project is expected to add approximately 90 kilometres of new rail corridors to the city's public transportation network, substantially enhancing connectivity across the sprawling metropolitan area.

The three-line expansion programme carries a total investment cost exceeding VND254 trillion, equivalent to approximately US$9.6 billion. Officials have prioritised the construction timeline to address the city's growing transportation demands and alleviate congestion on existing road networks.

Among the planned routes, one line will establish direct rail connectivity between central Ho Chi Minh City and Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the nation's busiest aviation hub. The airport link is expected to streamline passenger transfers and reduce travel times between the city centre and terminal facilities.

The broader metro expansion initiative forms part of Ho Chi Minh City's long-term strategy to modernise its public transportation infrastructure and support sustained urban development. The project reflects efforts to establish a more integrated rapid transit system capable of serving the city's estimated 9 million residents and growing commuter populations.
