Ho Chi Minh City prioritizes rapid transit expansion to airports and transport hubs

The southern metropolis has outlined an aggressive timetable for expanding its public transport infrastructure, with officials aiming to complete approximately 255 kilometers of urban railways by 2030 and over 500 kilometers by 2035. The expansion plan prioritizes connections to major transportation hubs, particularly the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport, which is scheduled to open in June.

Connecting the airport to the city's metro network represents a critical component of Ho Chi Minh City's broader vision to enhance regional mobility. In parallel with rail development efforts, city planners have approved seven dedicated bus routes to Long Thanh Airport ahead of its opening, ensuring multiple transportation options for travelers.

The comprehensive urban rail network is designed to significantly reduce traffic congestion and encourage public transit usage. Officials project that by 2050, public transport will account for 55–60% of total travel demand across the city, a substantial shift from current levels that underscores the strategic importance of these investments.

As part of its modernization efforts, Ho Chi Minh City is also integrating Internet of Things technology into smart transport infrastructure, enabling better traffic management, real-time passenger information systems, and improved coordination across different transport modes. These technological enhancements are expected to complement the physical expansion of the rail network and optimize the efficiency of the entire public transportation system.
