Ho Chi Minh City records over 3,800 lightning strikes in two-day deluge

Ho Chi Minh City was battered by severe thunderstorms on September 30 and October 1, during which meteorologists recorded 3,810 lightning strikes across the city, according to weather monitoring data. More than 2,000 of these strikes made direct contact with the ground, marking a significant electrical storm event for the region.

The two-day lightning activity represents the highest daily count documented in approximately 24 months, underscoring the intensity of the weather system that swept across Vietnam's largest city. Heavy rainfall accompanied the electrical storms, typical of the transitional weather patterns characteristic of this time of year in southern Vietnam.

The concentration of ground strikes—comprising roughly 53 percent of the total lightning activity—is particularly noteworthy for urban planners and safety officials, as such strikes pose greater risks to infrastructure, electrical systems, and public safety compared to cloud-to-cloud electrical discharges.

meteorological authorities have not yet issued formal statements regarding damage assessments or impacts on city services resulting from the electrical storm activity. The data comes amid Vietnam's shifting monsoon patterns as the country transitions from the southwest monsoon toward seasonal weather variations.
