Ho Chi Minh City remittances surge nearly 40 percent in third quarter

Remittances flowing into Ho Chi Minh City climbed to $2.835 billion in the third quarter, according to data from the State Bank of Vietnam's Regional Branch 2. The quarterly total marked an increase of more than $802 million compared to the second quarter, reflecting a pronounced turnaround in capital inflows to the southern metropolis.
The resurgence in remittance flows comes after the city experienced a 23 percent decline in the first half of the year, when global economic uncertainty weighed on overseas remittances. The third quarter recovery suggests improving confidence among diaspora communities and renewed investment appetite in Vietnam's largest commercial center.
Transfers tracked by the central bank include money sent through credit institutions and economic organisations, capturing formal remittance channels into the city. Ho Chi Minh City, as the nation's primary economic and financial hub, typically accounts for a substantial portion of Vietnam's total remittance inflows.
Authorities have indicated plans to direct growing remittance volumes toward technology and innovation sectors, seeking to leverage overseas capital for economic development and competitiveness. The shift reflects a broader strategy to upgrade the city's economic foundation beyond traditional industries.
