MANILA — Senator Risa Hontiveros has urged local government units and private sector entities to prioritize the establishment of hydration stations and cooling centers in accessible public spaces to protect citizens from escalating heat dangers during the Super El Niño period.
Hontiveros, who heads the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, emphasized that merely reporting daily heat index readings falls short of addressing the public health crisis. She stressed the need for concrete, preventive infrastructure to safeguard vulnerable populations from heat-related illnesses.
The call comes as the country continues to experience extreme temperatures attributed to the Super El Niño weather system. Health officials have warned of increased risks associated with prolonged heat exposure, particularly among outdoor workers, the elderly, and those without adequate access to cooling and hydration resources.
The senator's push seeks to mobilize both government and commercial institutions to take active measures in establishing these facilities strategically across communities. Such initiatives aim to provide accessible refuge and water supply for residents navigating the intensified heat conditions throughout the duration of the weather phenomenon.
