GEORGE TOWN — Hospital Seberang Jaya (HSJ) has achieved a significant milestone by establishing cardiac services at a Level 2 facility, addressing a longstanding gap in Penang's healthcare infrastructure. The new services are expected to substantially reduce patient backlogs and distribute cardiac care more equitably across the state.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the development as a strategic expansion of the state's medical capabilities, noting that the addition of these specialised services will help ease the burden on Penang Hospital, which has historically handled the majority of complex cardiac cases in the region.
The introduction of cardiac services at HSJ represents a shift toward decentralizing tertiary care services in Penang. By distributing specialist services across multiple facilities, the state healthcare system aims to improve accessibility for patients and reduce extended waiting periods that have long characterised cardiac treatment in the region.
Healthcare officials expect the new services to enhance patient outcomes through faster intervention times and more efficient resource allocation across Penang's hospital network. The expansion reflects broader efforts to strengthen secondary healthcare facilities and reduce over-reliance on flagship hospitals.
