House approves bill allowing former govt workers to maintain GSIS coverage

Lawmakers voted Tuesday to approve House Bill No. 10744, which seeks to amend provisions of a 1997 law governing GSIS membership eligibility and requirements. The measure would expand access to the state insurance system for workers who have separated from government service in non-career positions.

Under the proposed amendments, affected former employees would be able to maintain their GSIS coverage by making voluntary premium contributions, provided they meet other eligibility criteria set forth in the legislation. The change represents a significant shift in current policy that limits membership continuation for non-career government workers.

The bill now advances to the Senate for consideration as part of the legislative process. Proponents of the measure argue it would provide greater security and healthcare protection for former government employees who currently lack access to GSIS benefits following their separation from service.

The GSIS, formally known as the Government Service Insurance System, is the primary social security institution for civilian government workers in the Philippines. The organization provides pension, insurance, and health benefits to its members and their families.
