MANILA — Lawmakers are moving to investigate the interception of a major methamphetamine shipment bound for Philippine shores, with the House Dangerous Drugs Committee launching a formal probe into the smuggling attempt. Las Piñas Representative Mark Anthony Santos, who heads the committee, announced the inquiry Wednesday following the seizure of 521 kilograms of shabu in Laos, a haul valued at an estimated 3.5 billion pesos.
The committee has summoned Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla to provide details on the confiscation and the circumstances surrounding the drug trafficking operation. Officials are seeking to determine how the shipment was routed through Laos and what domestic networks may have been involved in the smuggling plot.
The case underscores ongoing challenges faced by Philippine authorities in combating transnational drug trafficking networks operating throughout Southeast Asia. The region has emerged as a major production and transit hub for synthetic drugs, with criminal organizations regularly attempting to move contraband across borders.
The committee's investigation is expected to examine coordination between Philippine agencies and international counterparts in border enforcement and intelligence sharing.
