MANILA — Legislation designed to equip authorities with enhanced legal tools to combat transnational drug syndicates engaged in narco-terrorism activities has been filed in Congress, according to an announcement Tuesday.
Las Piñas Representative Mark Anthony Santos, who chairs the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, introduced the measure as part of efforts to address the interconnected challenges of drug trafficking and terrorism financing. The bill aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework that would enable law enforcement agencies to more effectively prosecute and dismantle international drug trafficking networks that allegedly fund or engage in terrorist activities.
The filing comes amid growing concerns over the sophistication of drug syndicates operating across borders in the region, with authorities warning of the potential for illicit drug proceeds to finance extremist groups and destabilize communities. Lawmakers backing the measure argue that existing laws require strengthening to address the transnational nature and scale of modern drug trafficking operations.
The bill is expected to undergo committee deliberations in the coming weeks as the House evaluates the proposed legal mechanisms and their implications for domestic law enforcement and international cooperation efforts.
