MANILA – The House of Representatives has approved substantial increases in agricultural funding to help the food sector prepare for an anticipated Super El Niño event, Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III announced Monday evening.
The lower chamber added P4.09 billion in irrigation funding and allocated another P500 million for fertilizer assistance programs to support farmers facing potential drought conditions. The measures are intended to strengthen the agriculture sector's resilience ahead of the anticipated weather phenomenon.
The funding boosts underscore growing concerns about the impact of a Super El Niño on Philippine crop production and food security. Agriculture remains a critical sector for the country's economy and food supply, making advance preparations vital to mitigate potential losses.
The House's allocation represents a focused effort to equip farmers and agricultural infrastructure with necessary resources during what officials anticipate will be a challenging weather period. The additional irrigation investment is expected to help maintain water supplies for crops, while the fertilizer assistance aims to support continued productivity despite expected dry conditions.
